On 11 July, the Feast of St Benedict, the community of St Mary’s Abbey, Glencairn, celebrated with great joy as Sr Beatrice Brady made her Solemn Profession, committing her life to God according to the Cistercian way of life.

Surrounded by her sisters in community, together with her family, friends and all who gathered for the celebration, Sr Beatrice professed her vows of stability, fidelity to the monastic way of life and obedience until death. This joyful occasion marked the completion of her years of initial formation and her lifelong commitment to seek Christ in the monastic life at Glencairn Abbey.

A Solemn Profession is a most significant moment in the life of a Cistercian nun. After a period of formation and temporary vows, a sister freely offers herself to God in a lifelong commitment of prayer, work, silence and community. It is both a deeply personal response to God’s call and a joyful witness to the life of the Church.

Within the celebration of the Eucharist, Sr Beatrice made her solemn vows, signed her profession chart on the altar, and received the black veil and monastic cowl—outward signs of her lifelong consecration to God. She was embraced by her solemnly professed sisters and welcomed fully into the Chapter of the community, a beautiful expression of the communion and love at the heart of monastic life.

That Sr Beatrice made her profession on the Feast of St Benedict made the day especially meaningful. For over fifteen centuries, the Rule of St Benedict has guided monks and nuns in the search for God through humility, prayer, hospitality and mutual charity. In making her Solemn Profession on this feast, Sr Beatrice joins the long tradition of Benedictine and Cistercian women who have dedicated their lives to Christ in the monastic vocation.

We give thanks to God for Sr Beatrice’s generous response to His call and for the grace bestowed upon our community through her profession. May the Lord continue to strengthen and sustain her in the years ahead, and may her witness encourage others who are discerning God’s call in their own lives.

“Receive me, O Lord, as you promised, and I shall live; and do not disappoint me in my hope.” (Psalm 119:116)
