Catholic Guides of Europe Camp at Glencairn

This July, we had the great joy of welcoming a lively group of 8–12-year-old girls and their four dedicated leaders from Catholic Guides of Europe – Ireland to Glencairn Abbey for a four-night camping adventure.

With their tents pitched on the monastery grounds and hearts open to new experiences, the girls embraced both the fun and the quiet of their stay. Their camp was creatively themed on The Jungle Book, using prayer, reflection, community, and playful exploration—echoing, in a way, our own monastic values of simplicity, presence, and trust in God.

The girls joined the sisters for the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours on a few occasions, taking part in our rhythm of daily prayer in the Church. They invited some of our Sisters for a camp lunch, asking questions that were thoughtful, with contagious energy, and a willingness to listen—to God, to silence, and to one another!

In turn, we learned from them: their honesty, creativity, and enthusiasm reminded us of the joy and curiosity that lie at the heart of the spiritual life. It was a mutual exchange of grace.

Of course, Taisce, our little dog, was easily the most popular member of our community during their stay. Ever watchful, she patrolled the camp (for better or worse!), and made fast friends with all.

As the campers rolled up their tents and said their goodbyes, we were left with a sense of gratitude. We are thankful for the time we shared, for the witness of faith and virtue passed from leaders to girls, and for the seeds planted during these summer days in our valley.
