Sr Gertrude’s Diamond Jubliee
At St Mary’s Abbey, Glencairn, there was great joy and thanksgiving as the community celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of Sr Gertrude Kelly’s monastic profession on April 24th. Surrounded by her Sisters, the day was marked by a beautiful liturgy, with hymns chosen by Sr Gertrude on the theme of the Lord “preserving” our life in Him: “Preserve me God, I take refuge in You.” We had a festive lunch in honour of over sixty years of faithful service to God in the Cistercian way.
Over six decades Sr Gertrude has witnessed many changes in Church and society, yet the heart of her monastic life remains unchanged: seeking God in prayer, stability and obedience. Through the changing seasons of life, Sr Gertrude has remained rooted in the rhythm of the monastery, carrying within her a deep love for the Lord and for the community at Glencairn.
As archivist and librarian for many years, Sr Gertrude has also helped preserve the living memory of Glencairn Abbey and its Cistercian heritage. Her wisdom, humour and faithful presence continue to enrich the community.
In the words of the great Cistercian father St Bernard of Clairvaux: “We have been loved, therefore let us love.” These words reflect Sr Gertrude’s life in the Lord — a life shaped by the witness of love.
We thank God for the gift of Sr Gertrude’s vocation and pray that the Lord will continue to bless her with peace and joy in the years ahead.
