Feast of Blessed Gerard, Cistercian Monk
14 June 2010
Gerard was the second eldest brother of St Bernard whom he followed to Clairvaux where he became cellerar. His efficiency and generosity in this task and his monastic zeal are praised by Bernard in his Sermon 26 on the Song of Songs. He died in 1148.
Intercessions at Lauds for the Feast of Blessed Gerard:
We thank you O Lord for the sisters you give to us. Bless those who carry our burdens, who give us advice in perplexity, who save us when danger threatens.
Work within us, O Lord. Make us, as blessed Gerard was, alert to the needs of others, enterprising at our work and supportive of our superiors.
Work through us, as you did through Gerard, to sustain the frail, to encourage the fainthearted, to spur on the slothful and the negligent.
Concluding Prayer:
O God, you drew Blessed Gerard and his brother Saint Bernard
so close together in the bond of monastic life and holiness
that they seemed no longer two, but one in Christ.
By their intercession
so make our hearts one with you in charity
that all of us who serve you here on earth in unity of spirit
may share you as our one perfect joy in heaven.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit
one God forever and ever.
Amen.
