The journey of discerning a monastic vocation is usually preceded by a period of searching. Some may feel motivated to visit the monastery on a personal quest to find deeper meaning and purpose in their life. Others may be actively practicing Catholics seeking to learn about different forms of religious life, or may feel drawn to discover more about contemplative prayer. Whether you are actively seeking to discern your vocation in life or are simply open to growing closer to God and are interested in finding out more about the monastic way of life, you may like to attend one of our Monastic Experience Weekends which take place every few months here at St. Mary’s Abbey, Glencairn.
A monastic weekend is an opportunity for participants to experience the daily monastic rhythm of prayer and praise, monastic work and Lectio Divina here at the monastery. It also provides time-out for personal reflection and the opportunity to enjoy a quiet walk through the fields and by the river at the Abbey. There will be a chance to talk one-to-one with the novice director as well as introductory input on Cistercian life and spirituality. Meeting with other participants can offer valuable support on the journey of discernment. Participants stay in our monastery guesthouse for the weekend.
A weekend experience will not necessarily lead to a decision about the way forward but it usually sheds light on each one’s path. Women who have participated in these weekends have found them helpful in their spiritual lives.
Our next Monastic Experience Weekend will take place: 9-11 February, 2018. Contact Sr Sarah for more details at firstname.lastname@example.org
