St Mary's Abbey, Glencairn Building Project

Glencairn Abbey

St. Mary's Abbey, Glencairn, Lismore, Co. Waterford has been the much loved home of our monastic community since 1932. Owing to the continuous growth in membership of the community, the ongoing need of building repairs and the necessity of upgrading outmoded facilities, the community have been seeking professional assistance to assess their future needs since 2008. A renovation and building planning application to Waterford County Council received approval in the autumn of 2011, advancing the project to the present fundraising stage.

Plans for the renovation of the Abbey buildings include:

  • The upgrade of the accommodation wing in the Abbey enclosure
  • The refurbishment of our monastery guesthouse and provision of a new visitors centre
  • The provision of a new facility for the community's expanding greeting card business
  • Improved fire safety, accessibility and general services to the monastery buildings
  • DVD: Living Streams: the Story of St Mary's Abbey, Glencairn

The Story of St Mary's Abbey, Glencairn, introduces:

  • The Cistercian life and its values as lived today at St Mary's Abbey, Glencairn
  • The pre-foundation history of our Abbey building
  • The story of our foundation as a Cistercian community in St Mary's Abbey, Glencairn
  • The changes in monastic life that have impacted on our temporal and spiritual needs over the years since our foundation
  • The objectives of the current renovation project as we look to our future as a monastic community

  • Today, the community at St Mary's Abbey, Glencairn face the challenge in 21st century -monastic life of carefully preserving our valued monastic hospitality and outreach while continuing to nurture the essentials of the cloister: the silence and monastic solitude from which an authentic life of prayer is fostered, the monastic's gift to the church and to the world.
